Speculations about the toxicity of ‘Over the Counter’ head lice prescriptions and treatments on children and pregnant women had been debated for so long. Some believe that the level of toxin that will enter the blood system, especially in cases of repeated use if there’s any re-infestation would be considerably high. Not too mention of the fact that the lice itself would become resistant to the pesticides in the treatments. This will resulted in the failure of the treatment or a quick re-infestation.

Therefore, a lot of people are now going the ‘Home Remedy’ treatment route. Not only that it is considered safer to use, they are also more pocket friendly.

We’re going to take a look at some that some people had ‘swore’ to work wonders:

Mayonnaise

Often recommended by pediatricians as an alternative treatment. Saturate the hair with real mayonnaise and cover the head with a plastic foil or shower cap. Leave the mayonnaise sits on hair for at least 8 hours or overnight, then wash it out. After washing, carefully comb through the hair to remove any lice and nits. This treatment is best repeated every few days for about one and a half week.

Listerine

Saturate hair with Listerine, and place plastic foil or shower cap on head. Leave it on for about 2 hours. After rinsing, comb hair with a metal nit removal comb. All lice should be dead at this point. Next, you should saturate the hair with white vinegar, cover it again with plastic foil or clean shower cap for another hour. After one hour, you can then shampoo and condition the hair. Lastly, comb the hair with the nit removal comb again.

Coconut Shampoo & Tea Tree Oil

Combine equal amounts of shampoo and tea tree oil, lather through hair and cover with plastic foil or shower cap. Let the mixture penetrate the hair for at least two hours before rinsing. Apply a coconut condition and carefully comb through hair with a metal nit removal comb. Use this treatment for at least 3 times over a period of 2 weeks.  Make sure to comb through the hair each time. Some also suggested to mix tea tree oil with water and put it into a spray bottle and spray your child’s hair every day with this mixture.

Those are some of the methods use. Some people also swear by using conditioners such as pantene and leave overnight. Whichever treatment you choose, persistent is the key. Do not forget to wash all beddings, coats, scarves, soft toys, combs, and other hair items in hot water. Last but not least, if the hair is long enough, always tie hair back, and you can also use hair spray to keep it neat.
