The Worst Back to School Week Ever

back to school2

So I don’t have any school age children yet, but I am a high school teacher. This means that back to school time is still a big deal in our house. It means me transitioning back to school, and Patrick transitioning back to daycare. This year, we had the added transition of Dave starting a new job. Along with this, he is not able to take time off for 90 days (this will come into play later in the post).

This year, our family failed at back to school week so hard!

You might notice that this post is coming on Thursday. The week isn’t even over yet. That is how bad it has been.

Here are some things that happened to us this week, that you probably wouldn’t want to happen the first week back to school:

1. Kid having a fever on day 1

So Patrick woke up with a fever on Monday morning. Wonderful! So he is not able to go to daycare. Dave is not able to take off work (remember the 90 days thing?). I can’t miss my first day of class. Ugh! Enter my wonderful in-laws. Dave was able to drive Patrick out to their house for the day. Stressful situation to deal with early in the morning.

But wait! There’s more!

2. Dog + skunk = smelly mess

That’s right. On Monday morning, one of our dogs was sprayed by a skunk. Even more chaos to deal with on the first day of school. We had to put the dog in the basement and succumb to the fact that our house was going to reek when we got home. Boy did it! (4 days later and the basement still smells awful)

So that was all just the first day! I’m not sure how we all got where we needed to be.

3. Call from daycare

On Tuesday, we got a call from daycare because Patrick had only had dry diapers all morning. It was now noon. This is the child who poops almost every hour! After talking to the nurse at our doctor’s office, they said not to be concerned unless he had been dry for 12 hours. We were all prepared to have to take him to the ER for dehydration that night, but luckily he woke up from his nap at school, and it was business as usual in his diaper for the rest of the day.

4. Sick husband

Tuesday night my HUSBAND started to get a fever! (remember the 90 days thing again) We got him some medicine, and we were all in bed and asleep by 9:15 pm!

And now…the Pièce de résistance for the week…

5. Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Don’t know what it is? You are lucky. Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease is making its rounds this year. It has hit our daycare hard, and despite the nonstop cleaning and disinfecting they have been doing (and I have witnessed firsthand), my son still contracted it. Turns out his fever and drooling on Monday wasn’t teething as I had thought, but the initial symptoms of hand-foot-and-mouth. The rashes started to show Wednesday at daycare, so we got another call. I had to leave school (remember the 90 days thing again) to pick him up and take him to the doctor. He confirmed it was hand-foot-and-mouth.

rashes

Here are some pictures of his rashes. I spared you the ones on his bum, and didn’t even want to battle him to get one of his mouth.

So here I am, missing two days the first week of school. I am that teacher. However, I am a mom first, and I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.

So my little family will be quarantined in our skunky house for Labor Day Weekend, waiting this hand-foot-and-mouth out, then deep cleaning the house!

I know they say “When it rains, it pours”, but we are flooded over here. We are ready for some sunshine!

Have you ever had a week where it seemed everything went wrong all at once?
